‘AOC of the Midwest’ Offers Blunt Take on Squad Leader’s Ability to Lead Dems

Clear Facts
- Morgan Harper, a former Democratic Senate candidate known as the “AOC of the Midwest,” expressed doubts about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s potential to lead the Democratic Party.
- Harper criticized current Democratic leadership and emphasized the need for new leaders who can connect with younger voters.
- Harper stated that in Ohio, Ocasio-Cortez would not be the leader that voters are seeking.
Morgan Harper, a former Democratic Senate candidate from Ohio, often compared to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, recently shared her perspective on the leadership dynamics within the Democratic Party. Harper made it clear that she does not believe Ocasio-Cortez would be an effective leader for the party.
Harper’s comments come amid criticism from left-wing media and Congressional Democrats directed at Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer for supporting a GOP-backed spending bill that averted a government shutdown. Despite acknowledging the need for fresh leadership, Harper argued that someone like Ocasio-Cortez, known for her liberal stance, would not resonate well with voters in Ohio.
“I do think it’s troubling in this moment, with so much going on in the country, that we have these same people that were part of the problem that are continuing to keep focus on the past,” Harper stated. She emphasized the need for a “book written by a Democrat of how to win,” reflecting the desires of many Democratic voters.
Harper, who has been linked to the policies of “the Squad,” a group of progressive House members including Ocasio-Cortez, had her own political ambitions. During her 2022 Senate campaign, she was often labeled as the “AOC of the Midwest.”
The discussion about leadership within the Democratic Party extends to future elections, with some, like Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna, suggesting Ocasio-Cortez challenge Schumer in the 2028 Democratic primary. However, Harper believes the focus on President Joe Biden’s perceived decline is not aiding the party’s future prospects.
“There is a resistance among many folks in Democratic politics to let go and let a new generation take over,” Harper remarked. She highlighted the importance of connecting with young voters, criticizing current narratives as ineffective in mobilizing those who abstain from voting.
“When I talk to people in Columbus, Ohio, they are looking for a new generation of leadership. I don’t think they will accept anything less,” Harper added.
When asked if Ocasio-Cortez could be that new leader, Harper responded, “In Ohio, AOC is not that.”
Harper’s political journey includes challenging Democratic Rep. Joyce Beatty for Ohio’s Third Congressional District nomination and running for a U.S. Senate seat, both attempts ending in defeat.

That AOC has made any inroads in politics is the miracle of the ages. Because of the sheer stupidity of the voters in her district, America will have do deal with her seemingly forever. Now she is fully engrained in the swamp of DC. She became the darling of the media when she unseated a long term congressman. How she has never paid a penalty for losing 25,000 good paying Amazon jobs in her district is a demonstration that those in her district really aren’t paying attention to reality. My guess is she probably made more money in her first year in congress than she reported as income in all her years as a bar rag attendant. The progressives only care about their own well being, rather than the those in their district. If AOC wouldn’t be a good fit for Ohio, that speaks volumes for the intellect of its voters. At any point in time, as the Dems try to oppose common sense mainstream thinking, they will forever be the party of lost causes.
