Aurora Firefighters Defy Mayor’s Flag Order
Clear Facts
- Aurora, Illinois Mayor John Laesch ordered city flags to full staff, in opposition to President Trump and Governor Pritzker’s half-staff proclamations.
- Firefighters in Aurora refused to raise the flags, according to a circulating memo and eyewitness confirmations.
- The city’s order coincided with public mourning for TPUSA founder Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated at a university event.
Democratic Mayor John Laesch directed all city buildings, including fire stations, to fly the American flag at full staff, despite official instructions from President Donald Trump and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker to lower them out of respect for Charlie Kirk and victims of political violence.
A circulated memo from Fire Chief David McCabe relayed the mayor’s order to raise the flags and warned that any efforts to keep the flags at half-staff would violate a direct order.
“Good morning, all. As directed by the mayor, all City of Aurora buildings, including the fire stations, are to have their flags at full staff,” the memo stated. “I know everyone has their own opinion on whether the flag should be at full or half-staff, but that is irrelevant. Someone will be coming around to raise all station flags to full staff.”
The message made clear the administration’s stance, but local firefighters’ union members reportedly reached an understanding not to personally participate in raising the flags.
A video shared online showed the Fire Assistance Chief of Operations moving the flag, while firefighters on the ground declined involvement.

Frank Ricci commented,
“In flagrant disregard for unity, the mayor and chief raised the flags, chasing cheap political points over national mourning, exposing the left’s relentless pursuit of division over decency.”
The mayor later stated the decision was meant to focus on September 11th remembrance, adding his decision was not about one particular individual.
“Our focus was on remembering the lives lost on September 11th. On Friday, our flags were raised again as we moved forward, carrying with us the spirit and memory of those who died,” Mayor Laesch said. “I recognize that some employees and community members may not agree with this decision, but lowering the flag is a solemn act that carries great weight. The choice to do so should not be made cavalierly. Doing so diminishes the importance of the remembrance of tragedies like September 11, 2001.”
While other Democratic officials in cities like Los Angeles and regions like Iowa took similar stances, Aurora’s firefighters stood firm in their refusal, underscoring the disconnect between city leadership and local first responders.

I applaud the Fire Fighters of Aurora, Illinois buy showing a backbone to a cowardly mayor and chief. If there is any kind of extreme evil in the world the demonRAT communist party will bi first in line to practice it. The DNC is “satan’s spawn”.

“Cavalierly?” The man was murdered for his beliefs….put your politics aside, mayor, and honor him….it’s your obligation to do so – if you don’t feel you’re able to discharge your duties, resign them.

It seems to me to be another attempt to restrict free speech. It should be up to individuals to mourn as they want and for it not to be up to the governmental entities to tell them how to mourn.
