Clear Facts

  • Judge Aileen Cannon limited Ryan Routh’s leeway as he represented himself in court for attempting to assassinate President Trump.
  • Federal prosecutors detailed Routh’s alleged plot involving multiple phones, aliases, and stolen license plates.
  • Testimony included federal agents and a mental health counselor who identified and followed Routh after the incident.

Ryan Routh stood trial in Fort Pierce, Florida, representing himself against serious federal charges for allegedly attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump.

Judge Aileen Cannon cautioned Routh to uphold the dignity of the court, cutting off his opening statements when they became rambling and off-topic.

Five witnesses testified, including Secret Service and FBI agents, along with Tommy McGee, a counselor who helped authorities by noting Routh’s license plate and snapping a photo as Routh fled.

Federal prosecutor John Shipley stated to jurors that Routh engaged in a “carefully crafted and deadly serious plot” to prevent Trump’s re-election, using “a trail of lies” to cover his tracks.

“Agent Fercano is the reason he didn’t get away with it,” Shipley declared. “Mr. McGee is the reason the defendant didn’t get away.”

During cross-examination, Routh was often irrelevant, at one point congratulating witnesses. He told McGee he was a “hero” and “good man,” to which McGee replied that he acted for the safety of others.

“You’re the man, good work,” Routh said.

Routh tried to ask McGee if he was a Trump supporter, but the judge stopped him.

Secret Service Agent Robert Fercano described confronting Routh, who had a weapon pointed at him and was hiding in bushes, initially appearing as a homeless man. Routh’s first question in cross-examination was if it was good to be alive. Fercano answered,

“I don’t know your mindset.”

The trial started nearly a year after the alleged attempt on Trump’s life at his Florida golf course, following a previous attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania. Routh faces five federal charges.

Testimony resumes Friday morning, with Judge Cannon noting sessions may proceed quickly due to Routh’s short questioning.
