Clear Facts

  • The Democratic Party in Pennsylvania is losing registered voters at more than twice the rate of the Republican Party, with a significant number of Democrats changing their party affiliation.
  • Democrats still hold a lead in registered voters over Republicans, but their margin has decreased significantly from previous years.
  • Concerns are growing within the Democratic Party about campaign management and voter outreach efforts in Pennsylvania, particularly regarding Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign.

In the battleground state of Pennsylvania, a notable shift in voter registration dynamics is emerging, potentially altering the political landscape. Recent state data reveals that Democrats are switching their party affiliation at a rate more than double that of Republicans. This trend is causing the Democratic Party’s historical edge over the GOP to diminish.

As of the latest registration figures, Pennsylvania boasts a total of 9,088,583 registered voters. Among these, Democrats maintain a lead with 3,971,607 registered voters compared to the GOP’s 3,673,783. However, the gap between the two parties has narrowed significantly.

In 2020, Democrats held a more substantial lead over Republicans, with a margin of 685,818 voters. This year, that advantage has shrunk to 297,824, highlighting a net loss of 257,281 Democratic voters and a gain of 428,537 for the Republicans.

The Pennsylvania Department of State data further underscores this shift, showing that 54,668 registered Democrats have changed their party affiliation, compared to 25,634 Republicans. Philadelphia, a key Democratic stronghold, reported 18,928 Democrats switching affiliations, a stark contrast to the 3,401 Republicans who did the same.

Amid these changes, there are growing concerns within the Democratic Party about the effectiveness of their campaign strategies in Pennsylvania. Reports indicate that the Harris campaign is struggling to connect with voters, with issues such as poor campaign management and a lack of engagement with local Democratic leaders being cited.

Julie Chávez Rodriguez, Harris’ national campaign manager, responded to these concerns by stating:
“Our campaign is running the largest and most sophisticated operation in Pennsylvania history.”

She emphasized the campaign’s efforts in targeted advertising and outreach, particularly to Black and Latino communities, and highlighted Harris’s active presence in the state.

Meanwhile, Democratic Senator Bob Casey has taken a distinct approach by distancing himself from party leaders and aligning with some policies of former President Trump. In a recent campaign ad, Casey is portrayed as an “independent” who has “bucked Biden” on certain issues.

“Casey’s leading the effort to stop corporate greedflation and price-gouging,” the ad states, illustrating his efforts to appeal to a broader voter base.

As Pennsylvania remains a pivotal state for the upcoming elections, both parties are keenly aware of its significance. The presidential contest in Pennsylvania is currently categorized as a toss-up, while the Senate race leans Democrat. However, recent assessments have shifted the Senate contest to a toss-up, reflecting the increasing competitiveness of the race.

“Voter Outreach” means Republicans try to get out the vote, Dems move to falsify voter rolls, sign up illegals, change the rules at the last minute and print fake ballots.
