  • Carissa Jane Smith, a former substitute teacher in Missouri, was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Wednesday.
  • Smith pleaded guilty in September to one count of endangering the welfare of a child and two counts of sexual contact with a student.
  • The sentencing came after reports she offered money, marijuana, and alcohol to students in exchange for sex.

Carissa Jane Smith, 31, of Dixon, faced prison after her arrest in November on 19 counts including statutory rape and sexual contact with a student.

She resigned from her role in the Dixon School District in August 2024 following the investigation, according to a district statement.

Smith met victims in remote areas or when her husband was away, the sheriff’s office stated.

According to investigators, “Smith would offer students money, marijuana and alcohol in return for sex or to allow her to perform oral sex.”

Victims reported the encounters happened at Smith’s home or places like gravel roads and the side of the road, sometimes when the student was in middle school.

Investigators said, “Smith told them not to tell anyone about their encounters or else she could get into trouble.”

One student alleged Smith’s husband threatened him with a baseball bat after learning about a potential blackmail video involving Smith.

Smith’s sentence divides into six years for endangering the welfare of a child, plus two years each for the sexual contact charges.

Traditional values and safety in American schools are critical, and cases like this continue to raise concerns for parents and communities nationwide.
