  • FBI Director Kash Patel reports a renewed, aggressive counterintelligence initiative targeting the Chinese Communist Party, reversing previous Biden-era policies.
  • The FBI has seen a 40% increase in Chinese espionage arrests in the first year of the Trump administration’s return.
  • Illegal biolabs suspected of Chinese government ties have been uncovered in California and Las Vegas, prompting national security concerns.

FBI Director Kash Patel announced that the agency has revitalized counterintelligence efforts against China and its Communist Party after what he described as a period of neglect under the Biden administration. He voiced concerns that the prior leadership may have concealed key information about dangerous Chinese biolabs operating in the U.S.

“This FBI, under this leadership, has prioritized the threat against it by the CCP against us, and we’ve taken swift action,” Patel stated.

The renewed focus has already led to a significant 40% rise in Chinese espionage arrests this past year. Patel cited direct coordination with President Trump, the attorney general, and the Department of Justice to address and disrupt CCP activities on American soil.

Recent investigations revealed illegal biolabs in Reedley, California, and Las Vegas, Nevada, both linked to Chinese nationals facing federal charges. These discoveries have fed alarm among law enforcement and Congress over national security risks.

Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, director of the National Institutes of Health, said of the illicit facilities, “When you do research like this, potentially in an environment where there’s very little biosecurity, you’re posing hazards to everyone around you. And the fact is these were completely flying under the radar screen.”

He further warned, “We need a better system for detecting and preventing these kinds of labs from popping up, so that they don’t cause the kind of havoc, the sort of the worst kinds of stories.”

Patel accused the previous FBI leadership, including former Director Christopher Wray under President Biden, of dismissing or hiding Chinese links to the Reedley lab. He promised full transparency regarding the ongoing Vegas investigation.

“If you recall, a similar incident in Reedley, California from a few years ago was evidently buried by the prior administration, and they said it had no connection to the CCP,” Patel said.

He added, “When we discovered that, we took swift action to course correct the intelligence and figure out why the American public was misled by individuals in this institution, including my predecessor. We’re going to get to the bottom of it. We’re just awaiting the lab results, and we’re going to keep going.”

The FBI, working with state authorities in Las Vegas, executed search warrants and seized over 1,000 samples for analysis. Patel emphasized their commitment to fully investigating and exposing all threats linked to the CCP.

Jia Bei Zhu, accused of running an illegal lab in California, was arrested in 2023, while a property manager was apprehended during the Las Vegas raid. Police and lawmakers say the two operations are closely connected, both linked to Chinese government interests.

The House Select Committee on the CCP outlined Zhu’s past ties to Chinese state-owned enterprises and efforts to steal American technology. Their report detailed Zhu’s hiring practices favoring CCP-linked personnel and accused him of reselling counterfeit Chinese test kits falsely labeled as American-made.
