FCC Chair Warns ABC Over Kimmel Remarks

FCC Chairman Brendan Carr warned ABC and Disney that strong action could follow comments made by Jimmy Kimmel about the suspect in the Charlie Kirk case.
On Monday, Kimmel claimed conservatives were desperate to blame a left-wing ideology on Tyler Robinson, despite prosecutors linking Robinson to those views in Tuesday’s indictment.
“We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it,” Kimmel said.
Carr appeared on “The Benny Show” Wednesday and called Kimmel’s remarks “some of the sickest conduct.” He said there were potential “avenues” the FCC could explore in response.
“In some quarters, there’s a very concerted effort to try to lie to the American people about the nature … of one of the most significant newsworthy public interest acts that we’ve seen in a long time in what appears to be an action by Jimmy Kimmel to play into that narrative that this was somehow a MAGA or a Republican-motivated person,” Carr told host Benny Johnson.
He emphasized the unique responsibility of broadcasters under FCC licenses, noting, “They have a license granted by us at the FCC, and that comes with it an obligation to operate in the public interest.” Carr said companies could either change conduct voluntarily or face additional FCC work.
Carr described a public apology from Kimmel as a “very reasonable, minimal step,” and raised the potential for suspension by ABC as another option. He urged licensed broadcasters to stand up to Disney and consider preempting content if action isn’t taken.
“Public interest means you can’t be running a narrow partisan circus and still meeting your public interest obligations,” Carr said. “That means you can’t be engaging in a pattern of news distortion.”
While stopping short of directly accusing Kimmel of news distortion, Carr noted it could be argued the host made “an intentional effort to mislead the American people.” He called the situation “a very, very serious issue right now for Disney.” ABC and Disney did not respond to requests for comment.
Kimmel’s controversial remarks followed statements from the FBI and Utah Governor Spencer Cox confirming Robinson’s leftist ideology and history of radicalization.
Additional reports revealed that Robinson had been in a romantic relationship with a transgender partner who was biologically male and was transitioning to female.
On Tuesday, Kimmel criticized Vice President JD Vance for blaming the left, reacting to Vance’s claim on “The Charlie Kirk Show” that most “lunatics” in politics come from the far left.
“And by ‘statistical fact,’ he means complete bull—,” Kimmel reacted.

Highly doubtful. Disney decided it was in their best interest to piss off the president instead of the American public.which is exactly the calculation every institution needs to be making. The public’s voices and our buying power are its greatest weapons to repel the Trump Administration’s assault on our precious freedoms (precious to almost all conservatives).
It took just about a week to achieve Total Kimmel Victory. Jimmy was back on the air, even Sinclair and Nextar had abandoned their boycotts, and Trump was left seething in impotent rage.

Vice President Vance should not be able to make broad generalizations about the left and use inflammatory statements like the one he made about the far left.
It goes both ways, if Kimmel’s comments are not acceptable then Vance’s aren’t acceptable.
I understand that there is a difference in the manner that was used to broadcast the material they both used, and I also admit I don’t know the differences between the regulations of the two systems , but unless the FCC rules are different , than Vance should be made to apologize for his remarks and not be allowed to broadcast on the podcast for Turning Point.

As you can see, he didn’t in any way “praise” or “defend” the killing of Charlie Kirk. In fact, he called Kirk’s killing “murder”.
He did criticize the attempts by conservatives to score political points out of that murder as “a new low”.
BYW – He also suggested that the shooter was “one of them” (the “MAGA gang”). While there was evidence for that at the time, including statements from at least one family member, I believe that suggestion eventually turned out to be wrong.

Trump won the presidency, not an election for king. I’ll never “get over” defending freedom of speech. You see, it and other freedoms and rights are in the Constitution. Explicit approval of the very un-conservative notion that the Federal Government can and should revoke the broadcasting license of networks on whose air opinions are aired that is inconsistent with Big Government’s party line. Indeed, you “conservatives” want to expand license revocation to a whole host of broadcasters these supposed “conservatives disfavor.
