WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Gov. Mike DeWine announced on Wednesday that his state will give $1 million each to five vaccinated adults.
  • The lottery is an incentive for Ohio residents to get the vaccine.
  • Incentives of various kinds were also announced by several states to get people vaccinated.

Several states across the US have offered incentives of various kinds for people to get the COVID-19 vaccine.

On Wednesday, Gov. Mike DeWine announced an incentive program — a $1 million lottery — for Ohio residents to get vaccinated. The state will give five vaccinated adults $1 million each within the coming weeks.

The Republican governor highlighted the importance of getting the vaccine, saying it’s “time to end the health orders” people have been following since the pandemic started.

“Vaccination is clearly safer, regardless of age, than running the risk of getting covid,” DeWine said in his address.

The governor also urged businesses to offer incentives for employees to get the shot.

Ohio residents aged 12 to 17 will be eligible for a lottery to win a full four-year scholarship to a state university if they get vaccinated. The scholarship includes “tuition, room and board, and books,” DeWine announced.

Adults who have received at least their first dose of the coronavirus vaccine will be eligible, and winners will be announced every week for five weeks.

“The money will come from existing federal coronavirus relief funds,” DeWine said.

“I know that some of you are shaking your head and saying, ‘That Mike DeWine, he’s crazy. This million-dollar drawing idea of yours is a waste of money.’ But truly, the real waste at this point in the pandemic, when the vaccine is readily available to anyone who wants it, the real waste is a life that is lost now to covid-19.”

In New Jersey, residents who get the vaccine could get a free beer. The Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama announced that it will let people drive on its track if they will get the vaccine or be tested for COVID-19.
