Helicopter Crew Pulls Off Dramatic Mountain Rescue

- A U.S. Customs and Border Protection helicopter crew rescued an injured hiker 180 feet up from a cliff near Mammoth Cave in El Paso, Texas.
- The UH-60 Black Hawk operation also hoisted six local rescue personnel from the mountain on August 30.
- After extraction, all were transported straight to a trauma hospital for urgent care.
Air and Marine Operations’ El Paso team acted fast after receiving an emergency call from local search and rescue. Their skilled crew performed a challenging rescue in rugged mountain terrain, showing effective coordination with El Paso County Combined Search and Rescue.
The operation used a hoist-capable UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter to safely move both the injured hiker and all COMSAR rescuers in one mission.

According to El Paso Air Branch Director Efren Gonzalez, “The important lifesaving coordination and training we conduct with our local COMSAR partners has really paid off with these life-saving missions.”
After the rescue, medical personnel at the hospital provided intensive care to the injured hiker due to the seriousness of the fall.
CBP’s Air and Marine Operations division supports missions like this with aircraft and marine vessels across every state and U.S. territory.
