A stirring tale of heroism unfolded in Alexandria, Virginia recently when two police officers were presented with the daunting task of reviving a lifeless newborn.
The Alexandria Police Department (APD) received an emergency call just past the stroke of midnight, reporting a mother who had suddenly given birth to a baby with no signs of life.

Stepping into the crisis, the policemen took control of the harrowing scene with remarkable composure.
“APD Officers Hiltz and Reilly entered an apartment in the 3800 block of Executive Avenue, rushing to locate the baby. They found a newborn not breathing and without a heartbeat,” the APD reported.

Their instinct and preparation as trained first responders immediately took over.
“Without hesitation, Officer Hiltz began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) while Officer Reilly managed to keep the family calm,” the agency shared.

After two tense rounds of CPR, a miracle happened.
“After two rounds of CPR, Officer Hiltz located a pulse, and the baby began to “fuss,” as Officer Hiltz described it. The sound of a newborn baby crying could be heard throughout the home.”

Named Luis IV, the baby and his mother are now doing well, according to the APD.
They have been discharged from the hospital following a brief visit to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

Recalling the nerve-wracking ordeal, Officer Hiltz said, “It felt amazing to hear him cry.
In that moment, all the stress and fear of the situation just left me.”

The officers’ bond with the family didn’t end at the hospital; they later visited the baby and his parents at their home.

CPR is a lifesaving technique used to revive someone who has stopped breathing or whose heartbeat has ceased.
“CPR can keep oxygen-rich blood flowing to the brain and other organs until emergency medical treatment can restore a typical heart rhythm.” The officers’ swift application of this technique arguably saved young Luis IV’s life.
