House GOP Faces Obamacare Clash as Costs Loom

Speaker Mike Johnson said the House would vote on a new healthcare plan by month’s end.
Majority Leader Steve Scalise commented, “We are meeting with all of our caucuses and building a coalition. And so when we’re ready to go, we will.”
He noted, “But the focus has always been, you know, bills that will lower costs and give families options to help them, so they’re not trapped in the unaffordable care act.”
Bipartisan lawmakers including Rep. Jen Kiggans have proposed reforming and extending the enhanced credits, but some conservatives like Rep. Chip Roy oppose any extension.
Democrats argue ending the subsidies will sharply increase health insurance premiums for millions of Americans by the end of 2025, while Republicans debate fiscal responsibility and effective reforms.
Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick said new legislation could be released shortly to expand the credits for two years with additional reforms.
Rep. Mike Lawler stated, “The extension of the Affordable Care Act subsidy with reforms is something we all agree is necessary, and then have a much longer-term discussion about how we actually fix healthcare costs in America.”
Kiggans explained that letting subsidies lapse “cold turkey” would result in thousands of dollars in premium hikes for Americans.
She acknowledged the need to phase out temporary programs, but highlighted the immediate impact on families’ expenses.
Rep. Jodey Arrington argued against any expansion, saying, “I don’t know why Republicans, or people who consider themselves to be conservative, would give tacit approval and support of Obamacare by expanding subsidies of Obamacare.”
He added, “I see no utility at all in expanding in any form. No matter how much lipstick you put on that pig, it’s still a pig. And you need a whole different animal if you’re going to bring the cost down.”
The debate continues as leadership seeks unity within the party, with key votes expected in the coming weeks.
