House Oversight Targets Treasury Over Epstein Reports
Clear Facts
- Chairman James Comer has officially requested suspicious financial activity reports related to Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell from the Treasury Department.
- The committee’s investigation involves examining the federal government’s handling of Epstein and Maxwell’s cases, including Epstein’s death.
- Comer has issued subpoenas to multiple former top officials, and some have already appeared before the committee as part of the probe.
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer has called on the Treasury Department to deliver all suspicious activity reports connected to Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell by September 15.
The committee is focused on the federal government’s management of the Epstein and Maxwell investigations, with specific interest in the circumstances relating to Epstein’s death.
In a letter to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Comer stated, “It is essential that Treasury produce to the Committee certain SARs to assist the Committee’s oversight of the federal government’s enforcement of sex trafficking laws generally and specifically its handling of the investigation and prosecution of Mr. Jeffrey Epstein and Ms. Ghislaine Maxwell.”
The probe follows the establishment of the Task Force on the Declassification of Federal Secrets earlier in the year, which has pursued all Epstein-related documents from the Department of Justice.
The Department of Justice began releasing these records to the committee starting August 22.
Comer has also issued deposition subpoenas to several noteworthy individuals, such as former President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former FBI Directors Robert Mueller and James Comey, and former Attorney General Loretta Lynch.
Robert Mueller was scheduled to testify, but the subpoena was withdrawn after lawmakers learned he could not appear for health reasons, according to a source with knowledge of the investigation.
Former Attorney General Bill Barr was the first witness to testify in the ongoing investigation, having appeared before the committee last month.
