Federal law enforcement faced danger during a Friday operation targeting an illegal immigrant in a Chicago suburb, resulting in an ICE agent being injured and the suspect shot and killed.

The ICE agent, according to the Department of Homeland Security, sustained multiple injuries but is reportedly in stable condition.

The suspect, Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez, attempted to flee and allegedly dragged the agent with his vehicle during the altercation.

Officers said Gonzalez refused commands, accelerated toward them, and was subsequently shot and killed after striking the agent.

“We are praying for the speedy recovery of our law enforcement officer. He followed his training, used appropriate force, and properly enforced the law to protect the public and law enforcement,” assistant secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement.

“Viral social media videos and activists encouraging illegal aliens to resist law enforcement not only spread misinformation, but also undermine public safety, as well as the safety of our officers and those being apprehended.”

Family of the deceased claimed he was a longtime U.S. resident and father from Mexico, working in Portage Park.

ICE has increased operations in the Chicago area, deploying over 300 agents north of the city.

Community activists openly criticized the incident, expressing fear and frustration over federal enforcement actions.

“Today, we don’t feel safe. In a long long time, we don’t feel safe anymore. There is no reason why you are on the street, somebody stops you, and you are losing your life for it,” Marien Casillas Pabellon with the PASO West Suburban Action Project said.

“Let me tell you, we are not going to live in the shadows anymore. There is no way we are going back to that. So, ICE needs to get out.”

Laurence Benito of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights also commented, “The Trump and deportation machine is out of control, and operating with no transparency and accountability, and leading to senseless harm to our communities, families and neighbors.”

Governor J.B. Pritzker addressed the event on social media, promising transparency as the case moves forward.

Gonzalez’s stepdaughter said, “I will miss him, and I hope he’s resting now.”

She added, “He was fun guy. He respected people, and he doesn’t get into problems anymore.”
