A Salmonella outbreak potentially linked to some Jif peanut butter products has led to a recall.

According to a report with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), J.M. Smucker, the owner of Jif, initiated a voluntary recall of several products containing the contaminated peanut butter. These products were manufactured at its facility in Lexington, Kentucky.

Different types of peanut butter products were recalled, including creamy, crunchy, natural, and reduced-fat. The recalled products contain lot code numbers between 1274425 and 2140425, and only if the numbers end with 425, indicating they were manufactured at the factory.

The FDA urges consumers to throw out any product containing this code. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) added that it’s also important to wash and sanitize containers and surfaces that may have come into contact with the product.

The CDC stated that around four of five sick people reported eating different types of Jif peanut butter before becoming ill.

Cases of Salmonella linked to the products have been reported in 12 states, including New York, Georgia, and Texas. At least 14 illnesses and two hospitalizations were reported.

The FDA listed the following symptoms of a Salmonella infection: “fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.”

The agency added, “In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses.”

J.M. Smucker has yet to respond to a request for comment from Insider. The company also stated that it is yet to estimate the financial impact of the product recall.
