In a significant development, the Senate has confirmed Joe Kent to lead the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC).
The confirmation came through a 52-44 vote, marking a pivotal moment for the NCTC as it seeks to enhance its counterterrorism efforts under new leadership.
Tulsi Gabbard, the Director of National Intelligence, expressed her support for Kent, emphasizing his extensive military experience.
She stated, “With two decades of military service, including 11 combat deployments, Joe has consistently put country before self, enduring great personal sacrifice in that service.”
Kent’s military career is notable, having served in elite units such as the Army Special Forces, the 75th Ranger Regiment, and the U.S. Army Special Operations Command.
His expertise in counterterrorism and irregular warfare operations is expected to be a valuable asset to the NCTC.
Following his retirement from the Army in 2018, Kent joined the CIA’s Special Activities Center as a paramilitary officer.
His personal life has also been marked by tragedy; his wife, Shannon, was killed in Syria during operations against ISIS.
In his statement upon confirmation, Kent expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to lead the NCTC.
“It’s a profound honor to be confirmed as NCTC Director at this pivotal moment,” he wrote.
He continued, “I’ve spent over two decades on the front lines of the counterterrorism fight, from Fallujah to Yemen, losing my wife Shannon and countless brothers-in-arms to this war.”
Kent’s leadership is anticipated to reinvigorate the NCTC’s focus on counterterrorism and counternarcotics.
Gabbard highlighted that under his guidance, the center will work to integrate federal, state, and local law enforcement and intelligence agencies to fulfill national security mandates.
Kent’s political career includes two bids for Washington’s 3rd Congressional District as a Republican candidate.
His initial campaign in 2022 drew national attention after he unseated incumbent Republican Jaime Herrera Beutler in the primary.
Despite his loss to Democratic Washington Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez in 2024, Kent remains a prominent figure in conservative circles.
