Kim’s train, named Taeyangho or “moving fortress,” moves slowly—about 60 kilometers per hour—due to its heavy armor and challenging conditions on North Korean railways.

The journey to Beijing is expected to last roughly 20 hours to cover the 1,300-kilometer distance.

Reports indicate the train carries 10 to 15 carriages, with some cars reserved solely for Kim, including a private bedroom and facilities for meetings.

Other compartments are designated for security personnel and medical teams.

The North Korean Foreign Ministry confirmed Kim’s departure for Beijing on Monday.

“Kim Jong Un, general secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea and president of the State Affairs of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, left here for Beijing by his private train on Sept. 1 to participate in celebrations of the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War,” Korean Central News Agency reported, citing the ministry official.

Kim is traveling with senior officials, including Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui.

The upcoming parade will feature a large display of Chinese troops and new weaponry at Tiananmen Square.

The tradition of traveling to high-profile events on armored trains has been carried on by the Kim family dynasty, with both Kim Jong Un and his father Kim Jong Il relying on rail over air travel.

This visit follows recent moves by other regional leaders to work with the US in response to North Korea’s expanding arms program.
