Legal Observers Claim Raises Law Enforcement Alarm
Clear Facts
- Democratic politicians and left-wing groups labeled Renee Good a “legal observer” after she blocked ICE officers in Minneapolis, leading to a fatal police shooting.
- The term “legal observer” was created by the National Lawyers Guild (NLG) in 1968 during Columbia University protests and has recently resurfaced at anti-ICE demonstrations.
- Legal observers do not have special legal protections and must follow the same laws as everyone else during law enforcement operations.
Left-wing activists and their political allies have promoted the label “legal observer” to describe people actively interfering with federal immigration enforcement, such as Renee Good’s actions against ICE in Minneapolis.
Democratic officials referred to Good, who used her car to block ICE and accelerated toward an officer, as a “legal observer.”
The term was first used in 1968 by the National Lawyers Guild to describe witnesses overseeing police response at Columbia University, later gaining popularity during Black Lives Matter protests.
Currently, activists use this title during anti-ICE demonstrations where individuals physically block officers, disrupt detainments, and challenge law enforcement authority.
Even with this informal designation, those claiming to be legal observers are bound to obey all laws and police commands, including keeping a reasonable distance from enforcement actions.
Wearing a vest or pin does not grant these individuals immunity or special status to disrupt law enforcement.
“Legal observers,” like anyone else, may record on their phones, but they may not interfere with police work or impede ICE activity.
Multiple videos show anti-ICE protesters, calling themselves “legal observers,” crowding around officers, blocking vehicles, trying to remove suspects from custody, and shouting while recording officers up close.
In the incident involving Good, obstruction of enforcement occurred when she used her vehicle to prevent ICE from moving in an active zone.
This behavior is considered illegal, regardless of the “legal observer” label.
“Legal observer” is a self-applied term without formal meaning, similar to activists who dub themselves “street medics” without proper training or authority.
Good participated with a group called ICE Watch, which encouraged aggressive interference in law enforcement and even admitted it carried risks.
Despite these warnings, Good attempted to prevent law enforcement from doing its job, which ended fatally.
