Chicago law enforcement captured the suspect Friday during a search warrant execution at an apartment complex near the university campus.

Officers recovered a firearm at the location that is currently undergoing ballistic testing to match evidence from the scene.

Witnesses reported a masked individual aimed a firearm at Gorman while she was with friends at the Loyola Beach Pier.

The medical examiner confirmed the freshman business student died from a gunshot wound to the torso as she attempted to flee.

Investigators utilized internal building cameras to identify the suspect without his face covering after he was seen walking away from the pier.

Records show the suspect is an illegal migrant who had been released into the interior despite previous criminal activity.

Gorman’s family traveled from New York to honor the memory of the student who had hoped to see the Northern Lights that evening.

“What happened to Sheridan cannot be reduced to the idea of someone being in the wrong place at the wrong time,” the family said.

“This is the loss of a daughter. The loss of a sister. The loss of a future filled with milestones that will now never come.”

Loyola President Mark C. Reed addressed the student body following the incident, describing the unprovoked attack as a tragic loss for the community.

The suspect remains in custody while authorities finalize charges related to the unprovoked shooting on the lakefront.
