Jesse Merkel, father of 8-year-old Fletcher, shared,

“Yesterday, a coward decided to take our … 8-year-old son, Fletcher, away from us. Because of their actions, we will never be allowed to hold him, talk to him, play with him and watch him grow into the wonderful young man he was on the path to becoming.”

He continued,

“While the hole in our hearts and lives will never be filled, I hope that in time our family can find healing. I pray that the other victim’s family can find some semblance of the same.”

The family of Harper Moyski released a statement expressing their loss,

“We are devastated to share the our beloved daughter, Harper Moyski, was tragically killed in the recent school shooting. Harper was a bright, joyful and deeply loved 10-year-old whose laughter, kindness and spirit touched everyone who knew her.”

A total of 18 people, including 15 children, were injured; several remain in critical condition in the hospital. Among the injured is 13-year-old Endre Gunter, who underwent surgery and is expected to recover. Endre’s family remarked,

“Our hearts are shattered — not only for him, but for everyone who was harmed. We grieve and we pray: for the others who were shot, for their families, and for those who lost loved ones.”

The family added,

“Our son shared with us that an MPD officer ‘really helped him.’ He said the officer rendered aid, hugged him, reassured him, and prayed with him before getting into the ambulance. Unlike others, we are blessed to hold onto him. We will help him rebuild his life, his trust, and his confidence.”

Another victim, 12-year-old Sophia Forchas, remains in critical condition after a lengthy surgery, according to updates from her church and family.

According to acting U.S. Attorney for Minnesota Joe Thompson,

“The shooter was obsessed with the idea of killing children. The shooter saw the attack as a way to target our most vulnerable among us. While they were at their most vulnerable at school and at church. I won’t dignify the shooter’s words by repeating them. They are horrific and vile. But, in short, the shooter wanted to watch children suffer.”

The motive for the attack has not yet been publicly released by authorities. Support continues to pour in from the community for victims’ families as they seek peace and called for prayers.
