Royal Bahamas Police announced an arrest on Wednesday evening in connection to the case of missing American Lynette Hooker. The 56-year-old reportedly fell into the water from a small dinghy near Elbow Cay while traveling with her husband, Brian Hooker.
Authorities approached Brian’s yacht on Wednesday evening to conduct an inspection of the vessel. The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed they have shifted their efforts from a search-and-rescue mission to a criminal investigation.
Brian Hooker claimed his wife fell into the water holding the ignition key, leaving him unable to start the engine. He stated that turbulent currents and high winds separated them as he attempted to reach her.
“I am heartbroken over the recent boat accident in unpredictable seas and high winds that caused my beloved Lynette to fall from our small dinghy near Elbow Cay in the Bahamas,” Brian stated in a social media post.
The daughter of the missing woman, Aylesworth, expressed deep skepticism regarding the details provided by her stepfather. She noted that her mother was physically fit and never operated the small boat herself.
“I’m confused why she has the keys because she never drove the dinghy,” Aylesworth said.
“It was always Brian. So the story just doesn’t add up right now.”
Aylesworth also alleged a history of aggressive behavior by Brian, suggesting these patterns are relevant to the ongoing police probe. She called for an intensive review of all facts before the incident is labeled a mere accident.
“I’ve seen him choke out one of his daughters before. And we had to go to court for that,” Aylesworth added.
“So he’s just repeating patterns.”
Bahamian authorities continue to utilize drones and professional divers to search the marine and land areas. No formal charges have been filed against the individual currently in custody.
