The process to determine if someone is competent to stand trial has been described as “almost like a game, a ping pong.”
Nick Reiner is currently jailed and charged with murdering his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner. A new documentary examines factors that may have contributed to the crime, focusing on mental health challenges and past drug abuse.
The documentary contends Nick knew he killed his parents but is reportedly unaware of why he is incarcerated.
“He knows that he killed his parents, but he doesn’t understand why he’s in jail. He’s delusional. He thinks this is all a conspiracy against him,” said Charles Latibeaudiere, co-executive producer.
Nick’s alleged delusions are said to have worsened following a change in his medication for schizoaffective disorder, diagnosed in 2020.
Harvey Levin claimed Nick’s medication was changed one month before the murders due to side effects, which “messed Nick up … profoundly.”
Medical experts highlighted that after the medication adjustment, Nick’s behavior deteriorated and became violent. Some believe Nick should have received stricter supervision during this time.
Reports indicate his medication remains unresolved, and he is still described as “delusional.”
The Mayo Clinic labels schizoaffective disorder as involving symptoms of schizophrenia and mood disorders.
Dr. Josef Witt-Doerring explained, “The scariest thing about it is that when you’re altering your brain chemistry with illicit substances, i.e., you’re abusing methamphetamines, you’re abusing opiates, things of that nature, it can exacerbate the symptoms and make them exponentially worse.”
Nick previously spoke about his addiction, including experiences with rehab, and even wrote a film on his struggles that his father directed.
According to TMZ producer Olivia Heinle, after his diagnosis Nick stopped illegal drug use but still misused prescriptions. She said his stints in rehab focused on addiction and neglected his mental illness.
“So, there’s such a thing as dual-diagnosis facilities, which are places that treat both drug addiction and mental illness, so we’re told that the Reiners would put down a fortune for Nick to go to these places, but the problem is that he would stay for only 30 days … they’d get him clean off the drugs, and then they would just send him on his way without treating the mental illness,” Olivia Heinle explained.
Dr. Drew Pinsky noted, “30 days for me seems almost meaningless for somebody with Nick’s history,” emphasizing the need for a more structured approach.
Dr. Witt-Doerring added, “For someone like Nick, who clearly had a very long, complicated history with substance abuse and mental illness, this is not something that can be dealt with in 30 days. This is something that requires a much more comprehensive, long-lasting plan that follows him out of the hospital. What happened to the Reiners is not an uncommon problem. This is happening all over the country.”
Nick Reiner now faces double murder charges as his legal team weighs an insanity defense.
