Heavy rains before dawn caused severe flooding in Mokwa, a hub for northern farmers and southern traders. Local officials reported that over one hundred lives were lost, with the expectation that the casualty numbers would increase.

The flooding submerged entire neighborhoods, leaving many residents stranded or scrambling to save their belongings. Photographs showed rooftops almost completely under brown, murky waters.

“We lost many lives, and the properties, our farm produce. Those that have their storage have lost it,” Kazeem Muhammed, a Mokwa resident, said.

Niger state emergency spokesman IIbrahim Audu Husseini confirmed, “more bodies have just been brought and are yet to be counted.”

Mokwa community leader Aliki Musa described the floods as extremely rare, saying, “The water is like spiritual water which used to come but it’s seasonal. It can come now (and) it will reach another twenty years before coming again.”

Chairman Jibril Muregi emphasized the urgent need for infrastructure improvements, stating, “This critical infrastructure is essential to mitigating future flood risks and protecting lives and property.”

Severe weather, including excessive rainfall, has worsened seasonal flooding in northern Nigeria, and similar disasters left dozens dead in Maiduguri last September.

Efforts to install effective flood-control measures have not kept pace with the scale of the threat, underscoring the importance of proactive community planning and resilience.
