Online Responses Expose Split on Kirk’s Death

Media personalities and Democratic leaders continue to claim that left-wing activists did not celebrate Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk’s assassination. Online evidence, however, shows numerous posts on platforms such as BlueSky and X, with individuals mocking or justifying Kirk’s death.

MSNBC’s Brandy Zadrozny dismissed reports of widespread online celebration, calling them the “total opposite” of reality during a televised segment.

“I think if you look across media generally, you have seen a lot of people trying to grapple with Charlie Kirk’s legacy and what that is as a right-wing agitator and as a provocateur and as, you know, a strategist and the most important GOP figure besides Donald Trump, arguably ever,” Zadrozny said. “And so — or right now. And so, there’s a lot of grappling to do. But to suggest that the Internet is cheering for this is just the opposite, total opposite of what’s actually happening.”

Similar claims were made by historian Heather Cox Richardson and by Rep. Jamie Raskin, who told the House Judiciary Committee,

Despite these statements, critics and watchdogs like Tom Elliot and LibsofTikTok collected video and text posts from left-leaning individuals and public figures openly celebrating or minimizing the severity of Kirk’s murder. Notably, at least two journalists and several public employees were fired after their posts surfaced.

One video, compiled by Elliot, featured a young woman singing about Kirk being shot. In another, a self-identified transgender individual stated, “He was shot in the middle of saying something transphobic about trans people and yet you want to have sympathy for him.”

Teachers, university staff, healthcare workers, and several officials are reportedly under investigation for social media posts perceived as celebrating or justifying Kirk’s passing.

According to a Rutgers/Network Contagion Research Institute survey, over half of left-leaning respondents said that high-profile assassinations of public figures like President Donald Trump or Elon Musk would be at least partially justifiable.

Republican and conservative leaders, such as Scott Jennings, have strongly condemned online approval or rationalization of political violence, emphasizing its threat to national unity.

“Charlie Kirk was a mainstream conservative Republican,” Jennings said. “He [Kirk] had views that are held by tens of millions of people, including more than half the country in the last election.”

“So if you’re online saying this is justified, what you’re actually saying is, ‘Half the country I live in, there’s some justification to commit violence or murder against them,’” Jennings continued. “And that’s what is concerning about the people who are doing this, and that’s why I don’t think anybody is losing any sleep about these folks not being able to teach our children.”
