Oregon Murder Suspect Recaptured After Jail Error
Clear Facts
- Ty Anthony Sage, a murder suspect, was mistakenly released from Multnomah County Detention Center in Portland after posting bail due to a clerical error.
- Sage is charged with second-degree murder and first-degree robbery in the 2021 death of 15-year-old Lowgunn Ivey and was recaptured at a gas station in Florence, Oregon, after a multi-day manhunt.
- Sheriff Nicole Morrisey O’Donnell confirmed the error, promised improved protocols, and the victim’s family has expressed deep frustration over the incident.
Authorities in Oregon have confirmed that Ty Anthony Sage, who was accidentally released from jail after posting bail, is now back in custody. The sheriff’s office cited a clerical error as the cause of his release.
“Ty Sage should never have been able to post bail,” Sheriff Nicole Morrisey O’Donnell said in a press release.
Sage, 26, faces second-degree murder and first-degree robbery charges for the killing of 15-year-old Lowgunn Ivey in 2021. A judge had denied him bail, but an administrative mistake set it at $5,000, allowing his release.
He was recaptured around 1 p.m. on Thursday at a gas station in Florence, Oregon—roughly 180 miles from the Portland jail—thanks to the efforts of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force.
Officials emphasize the release resulted from a misinterpretation of a court order by jail staff. An internal review is underway to prevent such incidents in the future.
“Lowgunn’s family deserved better,” Morrisey O’Donnell said. “As Multnomah County’s sheriff, I am committed to making sure this does not happen again, that we learn from our mistakes, and that Lowgunn’s family can have justice.”
The victim’s mother, Jodie Ramsey, voiced her outrage at the error but is relieved Sage is back in custody.
“I feel like they failed me,” Ramsey said. “I feel like they failed the community as well, not just me, but everybody else’s safety out there, too, because he’s an accused child killer. I mean, there’s no saying what he could do to anybody out there.”
Ramsey is considering legal action against the county, and further investigation continues.
