Sam’s Club Plus Members Reconsider Loyalty Over Shipping Policy Change
Clear Facts
- Sam’s Club has announced changes to its Plus membership plan, which will implement a minimum purchase amount for orders to qualify for free shipping.
- The change has incited frustration among Plus members, many of whom are considering switching their membership to Costco in response.
- Sam’s Club defends the change, arguing it allows members increased access to different shopping methods.
Known for its benefits of bulk purchasing, competitive pricing and comprehensive perks like free curbside pickup and same-day delivery, Sam’s Club has revealed an impending change to its Plus membership plan. This alteration has been met with widespread disagreement among members, several of whom are contemplating switching their shopping allegiance to competitor Costco.
The Plus membership, which carries an annual fee of $110, offers members numerous benefits including members-only fuel savings, exclusive discounts, and notably, free shipping on all orders. However, starting from August 19, free shipping will only be applicable to orders that include a minimum of $50 worth of eligible items pre-tax. This decision was communicated via an update on the Sam’s Club membership page.
In a statement, a Sam’s Club spokesperson emphasized their focus on members, stating, “Our members are at the heart of everything we do.” The spokesperson added that the big-box chain is “continuously striving to provide an easier and more convenient shopping experience for our members.”
Despite this assertion, a number of Sam’s Club Plus members have voiced their displeasure over the new changes on various social media platforms. The consensus among these members is a feeling of betrayal, with claims that Sam’s Club is “taking away benefits.”
One discontented member voiced their annoyance, saying, “Hey @SamsClub, how are you justifying these new changes and now for Plus members, we have to order $50 or more for free shipping?? You are taking away benefits. ENOUGH, respond back to your Plus members. This is unacceptable!!! Don’t ignore us!”
Sam’s Club responded, “Thank you for your feedback. By adding a cart minimum, we are expanding access to different shopping methods for our members. This will make it simpler for you to get the products you want, the way and when you want.”
However, some users dispute this, suggesting that the change is not simplifying the shopping experience but complicating it for top-tier customers. In the face of these complaints, several Plus members are considering taking their business to Costco instead, citing the end of free shipping as the main reason.
One member pointed out, “Since you are eliminating free shipping for Plus Members (except for +$50 orders), will you be reducing our annual membership fee? If not, I will be switching to Costco when my current membership expires. Bad business move!” Another added, “@SamsClub discontinuing free shipping for Plus members unless you spend $50 is absolutely absurd. There’s no valid reason for me to keep my Plus membership anymore. I’m going to switch to Costco when my membership expires.”
These changes and the ensuing backlash underline the essential role that membership benefits play in maintaining customer loyalty in the competitive sector of retail chains. It remains to be seen whether Sam’s Club will address these concerns or risk losing members to Costco.

Definitely considering not renewing my membership. Probably will look into Costco.

Why change to Costco? Isn’t the membership fee higher for them? Just stay with Sam’s and go back to the basic membership if you feel like you’re not getting enough benefits for the extra cost of the plus membership.

“By adding a cart minimum, we are expanding access to different shopping methods for our members. This will make it simpler for you to get the products you want, the way and when you want.”
Wasn’t Sam’s Club doing this before the cart minimum? Sounds like a load of BS!
