Senate Republicans Move to Block IRS Abuse

“The IRS is not a campaign finance enforcement agency,” a source familiar with the legislation said.
Backers argue this defends First Amendment rights, saying the IRS does not need donor identities for its core tax functions.
Sen. Braun warned about the risk of the IRS being used as a political weapon, referencing prior incidents where conservative groups were targeted.
“We saw during the Obama years that the IRS was used as a political weapon to target conservative nonprofits, and under H.R.1 the Biden IRS would be empowered to block tax-exempt status and publicly expose a group’s donors to harassment from liberal groups and the media if their beliefs are deemed to be politically unfavorable,” Braun said.
The measure comes after the controversial IRS conduct during the Obama administration, when conservative organizations faced heightened scrutiny and lengthy delays.
Following legal battles, the IRS in 2017 apologized for its actions, admitting to improper treatment during the nonprofit approval process.
“For such treatment, the IRS expresses its sincere apology,” the IRS stated then.
This bill seeks to make sure that federal agencies cannot again be weaponized against Americans exercising their constitutional rights.
