SNL Joke About Trump’s Theater Visit Sparks Audience Cheers

Clear Facts
- A Saturday Night Live audience applauded a joke referencing President Donald Trump.
- Host Michael Che made the comment while discussing Trump’s recent theater attendance.
- The segment drew attention because of past threats and attempts against Trump.
During Weekend Update, Michael Che noted that President Trump attended the opening night of the musical Chicago at the Kennedy Center. Che then compared the visit to theater attendance by past presidents, referencing Abraham Lincoln’s assassination in 1865.
“President Trump attended the opening night of ‘Chicago’ at the Kennedy Center, and I think that’s cool that the President is going to the theater. I mean, what’s the worst that could happen?”
The live audience responded with loud laughter, then cheers and applause. The reaction came despite multiple violent threats and attempts against the president over the past year.
In July 2024, Trump was wounded during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, when a gunman’s bullet grazed his ear.
A second attempt was thwarted by Secret Service agents in September at his West Palm Beach golf club.
Security concerns remain high after law enforcement recently stopped an armed individual attempting to enter Mar-a-Lago in February. A West Virginia woman was also charged in January for allegedly seeking someone to carry out an attack.
The White House has not issued a formal statement about the comedy segment or the audience reaction.
