Southern Furniture Giant Badcock Faces Shuttering of All Stores Amidst Parent Company Conn’s Bankruptcy Struggles
Clear Facts
- Southern U.S.-based retailer Badcock Home Furniture & More is closing all of its nearly 400 stores, as announced on Tuesday.
- Badcock’s owner, Conn’s, fell into bankruptcy in July, accumulating nearly $2 billion in debt with substantial overhead costs after acquiring Badcock in 2023.
- With the impending closure of all Badcock stores and the decision by Conn’s to close many of its own Conn’s HomePlus stores, approximately 451 of Conn’s 553 locations are on the verge of closure.
Badcock Home Furniture & More, a staple in the Southern U.S. retail landscape for the past 120 years, has announced its impending closure. The chain, which operates more than 380 stores across several southern states, is set to shutter all its locations.
Its parent company, Conn’s, filed for bankruptcy in July. Conn’s, another retailer dealing in furniture, appliances, and other home goods, reportedly accumulated nearly $2 billion in debt, along with heavy overhead costs following its acquisition of Badcock in 2023.
The specific closure dates for the stores remain undisclosed. However, Badcock currently has a “going out of business sale” in effect, offering merchandise at discounts of up to 50 percent.
In addition to every Badcock location closing, the parent company has decided to shut a significant number of its own Conn’s HomePlus stores. As a result, 451 out of Conn’s 553 outlets are now part of the “everything must go” sale.
While not all Conn’s stores are being closed, the list of closures is extensive and affects locations across the south, including an astounding 74 outlets in Texas alone.
The company acknowledged in a July 23 court filing that it might be necessary to close “some, all, or a significant number” of store locations to increase liquidity and maximize the value of the bankruptcy estate.
Uncertainty clouds the future of the remaining 100 Conn’s HomePlus stores. The closures impact around 3,800 full-time and 150 part-time employees working at Conn’s and Badcock stores.
These developments follow a recent trend of major retailers facing massive store closures, including Dollar Tree, 99 Cents Only, and Rite Aid.
