“If you’re trying to lose body fat and gain muscle at the same time, one of my all-time favorite hacks is to choose carbs that pack protein,” said Lauren Hubert, a registered dietitian and nutrition expert from Massachusetts.

Carbs like quinoa or sprouted grain bread can supply about 40 grams of protein per meal, making it possible to reach higher protein goals without extra meat.

“Do that three times a day, and you’re hitting 120 grams without even adding snacks,” Hubert said.

Higher-fiber carbs contribute to daily protein targets while also supporting blood sugar management and helping you feel full longer.

“It really comes down to how much you’re eating and what you’re eating,” she emphasized.

Hubert recommends five key carb sources: quinoa for plant-based protein, sprouted grain bread for a smart bread swap, whole wheat pasta for more nutrients, and chickpeas and lentils for fiber and protein.

“Ten years ago, we didn’t even want to talk about carbs. They were horrible. They caused belly fat,” said Hubert. “Now fiber is getting its big moment, and it’s actually bringing carbs back to the table.”

Whole wheat pasta, beans, chickpeas, and lentils all supply important vitamins and minerals along with their protein content.

The recommended daily protein amount is 46 grams for women and 56 grams for men, but those seeking muscle growth may need even more.
