  • Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested Jaan Shah Safi in Waynesboro, Virginia for alleged ties to ISIS-K.
  • Safi entered the U.S. during the Afghanistan withdrawal and is linked to the group responsible for killing 13 U.S. soldiers in Kabul.
  • Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem criticized the Biden administration for endangering national security through its handling of Afghan immigration.

Federal immigration officials detained Jaan Shah Safi in Virginia, around 100 miles from Washington, D.C. Safi is accused of having ties to ISIS-K, a terrorist organization responsible for deadly attacks in Afghanistan.

The Department of Homeland Security confirmed Safi entered America during the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan. Authorities reported this marks the third arrest of Afghan nationals tied to violent incidents in the past week.

“The Biden administration brought this terrorist into the U.S. under the disastrous Operation Allies Welcome program. This terrorist was arrested miles from our nation’s capital where our brave National Guard heroes, Sarah Beckstrom and Andrew Wolfe, were shot just days ago by another unvetted Afghan terrorist brought into our country,” said Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem in a statement.

Noem stated the administration created a severe security crisis through its withdrawal policy and allowance of unvetted individuals into the country.

“Biden let into our country nearly 190,000 unvetted Afghan aliens–only determining who they were and their intentions when they were already on American soil. President Trump has been working every day since January 20 to clean up this unmitigated national security crisis,” Noem added.

This incident follows the August 26, 2021, suicide bombing outside Kabul’s airport by ISIS-K, which resulted in the deaths of 13 U.S. service members and dozens of Afghans. Recent arrests include Rahmanullah Lakanwal, accused of shooting two National Guardsmen in Washington, D.C., and Mohammad Dawood Alokozay, arrested in Texas on terroristic threat charges.
