Trump Halts Senate Nominee Talks After Demand Clash

After hours of discussion, efforts to confirm President Trump’s nominees failed when the president directed Republicans to stand down.

Senate Democrats and Republicans each blamed the other, but President Trump made it clear on social media he would not accept the demands.

In his post, Trump accused Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of “demanding over One Billion Dollars in order to approve a small number of our highly qualified nominees.”

“This demand is egregious and unprecedented, and would be embarrassing to the Republican Party if it were accepted. It is political extortion, by any other name,” Trump said. “Tell Schumer, who is under tremendous political pressure from within his own party, the Radical Left Lunatics, to GO TO HELL!”

“Do not accept the offer,” he continued. “Go home and explain to your constituents what bad people the Democrats are, and what a great job the Republicans are doing, and have done, for our Country. Have a great RECESS and, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!”

Senate Minority Leader Schumer claimed the president gave up on an agreement while both sides were close to confirming a number of nominees.

“He took his ball, he went home, leaving Democrats and Republicans alike wondering what the hell happened,” Schumer said, referencing President Trump’s statement.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune confirmed there were many negotiation offers, but no final agreement could be reached.

“There were several different times where I think either or both sides maybe thought there was a deal in the end,” Thune explained.

Democrats wanted the administration to release frozen federal funds and agree to future limits on policy changes, exchanging these for supporting non-controversial nominees.

Sen. Markwayne Mullin criticized Schumer for escalating his demands during the talks.

“We’ve had three different deals since last night,” he stated. “And every time it’s been, every time it’s ‘I want more,'” Mullin said of Schumer’s actions.

Mullin said Republicans were prepared for President Trump’s call to halt negotiations and indicated a possible confirmation process change in September.

“You get to a realization that there was, it was never about making a deal,” he said, arguing Democrats sought to blame the president at all costs.

Thune added, “The asks evolved on both sides quite a bit over time. But in the end, we never got to a place where we had both sides agree to lock it in.”

Democrats disputed claims of shifting positions, saying Republican leaders kept increasing their nominee list and trying to add partisan choices.

Schumer warned against changes to Senate rules and urged President Trump to cooperate with Democrats as major funding deadlines approach.

“They should stop listening to him,” Schumer remarked. “If they want to do what’s good for the American people, they shouldn’t be in blind obeisance to Donald Trump.”
