Trump Seeks to Tackle Crime as Democrats Resist
Clear Facts
- President Trump is taking steps to address crime in major U.S. cities, including sending federal troops and ending cashless bail policies.
- Democratic leaders in cities like Chicago and Washington, D.C. have criticized these actions, claiming they violate constitutional rights and are unnecessary.
- Crime rates remain high in these cities, with polls showing public concern about safety, and some Democrats are facing record-low approval as a result.
President Trump is moving to address the rise in crime in America’s most dangerous cities, drawing harsh criticism from Democrat leaders who oppose his efforts.
These leaders are concerned they will be exposed as ineffective, especially as public frustration with crime grows across party lines.
Efforts to counter the “soft on crime” image led Democrats like Bill Clinton to pass tough legislation in 1994, but the party has since distanced itself from those measures.
Recent years have seen Democrats support policies such as defunding police and cashless bail, which critics argue have made cities less safe.
President Trump has signed an executive order abolishing cashless bail and has threatened to deploy National Guard troops to violence-plagued cities like Chicago.
Mayor Brandon Johnson called the idea “the most flagrant violation of our Constitution in the 21st Century.”
He also stated, “The City of Chicago does not need a military occupation.”
Chicago continues to face severe crime problems, with 254 homicides by mid-August, outpacing New York City’s numbers despite a smaller population.
Surveys from the 2023 mayoral race found two-thirds of Chicago residents didn’t feel safe, making crime the most important concern for voters.
Johnson’s approval rating has dropped to just 26%, the lowest of any major U.S. mayor, despite efforts to support minority communities and welcome migrants.
Only 26% of Hispanic and 38% of Black residents give him a positive job rating.
According to the Chicago Crime Lab, “Black residents [are]…22 times more likely to be killed compared to white residents.”
The study also found that neighborhoods with the highest murder rates have “approximately 68 times more homicides than those with the lowest rates.”
Johnson dismissed concerns about crime, telling NPR that National Guard deployments would be “not Democratic, illegal, and costly.”
He argued violent crime in Chicago has recently declined, but similar trends have been seen nationwide as post-pandemic spikes subside.
Other cities, such as Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, continue to experience serious safety issues, making them potential targets for federal intervention.
Governor Kathy Hochul sent National Guard troops into New York City’s subway system, resulting in a significant drop in crime on public transit.
She commented, “I think people will tell you … they feel much safer.”
Despite these efforts, Hochul has criticized Trump, calling his use of federal troops a show of “abusive power,” but claims her deployments are different due to local cooperation.
Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has also shifted her stance, initially supporting increased federal officers, then opposing Trump’s anti-crime tactics as political pressure mounted.
She told reporters, “What I’m focused on is the federal surge and how to make the most of the federal officers that we have.”
Later, she urged voters to “make sure we elect a Democratic House so that we have a backstop to this authoritarian push.”
The result has already been a decline in crime in Washington, highlighting the impact of stronger enforcement.
President Trump is betting that the residents of crime-plagued cities want real action to restore safety and order.

Well I wish some of these democratic mayors would be crime victims and then they would feel differently. It is horrible they don’t want help. It is not a takeover by Trump, it is to save America.
