Clear Facts

  • The Trump administration seeks to withdraw federal approval for a major offshore wind farm off Maryland’s coast.
  • The Department of the Interior issued a work stop order for an offshore wind project near Connecticut the same day.
  • These moves reverse policies from the Biden administration that supported wind and solar energy projects.

The Department of the Interior is working to withdraw approval for the Maryland Offshore Wind Project, according to a court filing by Attorney General Pam Bondi.

A work stop order was also issued for Revolution Wind off Connecticut, highlighting the Trump administration’s broader crackdown on wind energy projects that had federal support under President Biden.

“Interior intends to move to voluntarily remand and vacate its approval of the Construction and Operations Plan (COP) for the Maryland Offshore Wind Project,” the filing stated.

The Maryland project was originally approved under Biden in July 2024 and included up to 114 wind turbines.

The agency has also taken actions to halt the Revolution Wind project, move to cancel other large wind projects, and end “preferential treatment” for wind energy technology labeled as “unreliable” and “foreign-controlled.”

The Biden administration promoted green energy efforts and provided substantial funding to wind and solar, while making regulations stricter for traditional energy sources.

Biden once declared he would “shut down” coal plants “all across America.”

“America has subsidized expensive, intermittent, and hazardous wind projects for over 30 years,” wrote DOI Secretary Doug Burgum Sunday.

“Under President Donald Trump, we are investing in RELIABLE energy sources that actually support our electrical grid!”

An executive order signed by Trump in July directed the Department of the Interior to eliminate regulatory preferences for wind and solar, as he continues to campaign for dependable American energy production.

On Truth Social, Trump wrote that “any State that has built and relied on WINDMILLS and SOLAR for power are seeing RECORD BREAKING INCREASES IN ELECTRICITY AND ENERGY COSTS. THE SCAM OF THE CENTURY! We will not approve wind or farmer destroying Solar. The days of stupidity are over in the USA!!! MAGA.”

Maryland was announced to be eligible for nearly $5 million in federal funding to expand its offshore wind programs under the previous administration.

Several new wind projects in Maryland have already been cancelled as priorities shift back to reliable sources.
