“Based upon a very productive meeting that I have had with the Secretary General of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), Mark Rutte, we have formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic Region,” Trump posted to his Truth Social account.
The president used his address at Davos to underline failures of European-style globalism, warning that the continent’s loose immigration controls have caused loss of cultural identity. Trump asserted that American leadership—especially through strengthening control in strategic regions—offers security that Europe cannot match, hinting that U.S. acquisition of Greenland would protect allied interests.
Various options for the deal include outright purchase, long-term leasing, or expanded military rights, but Trump made clear he favored full U.S. ownership for security reasons. He dismissed leasing as inadequate, saying, “You can’t defend it on a lease. Legally it’s not totally defensible. And also psychologically, who the hell wants to protect a lease?”

Trump commented that Canada should better recognize America’s contributions to its prosperity and safety, reinforcing his stance that U.S. leadership underpins allied security.
On the international stage, Trump called on Ukrainian and Russian leaders to swiftly negotiate peace, stating that inaction would be “stupid” and affirming his commitment to advancing American interests.
He concluded by announcing recent executive actions on housing and trade policy, promising further discussion as talks with Greenland and NATO continue. The final specifics of the arrangement remain subject to ongoing negotiation, aimed at preserving national security and economic advantage.
