Iran’s women’s national soccer team faces tough choices after competing in Australia’s Women’s Asian Cup. Five players accepted asylum offers, transported to safety overnight.
The rest must weigh family ties against dangers back home. Coach Marziyeh Jafari stated players want to return soon.
The team refused Iran’s anthem before their South Korea match, seen by some as protest amid homeland turmoil.
They sang it later before elimination by Philippines.
Protesters outside hotel chanted “Save our girls,” waving pre-Revolution flags as a bus departed.
The asylum players approved public names, insisting they’re not activists.
“I don’t want to begin to imagine how difficult that decision is for each of the individual women, but certainly last night it was joy, it was relief,” Burke told reporters after signing documents.
“People were very excited about embarking on a life in Australia.”
“These women are tremendously popular in Australia, but we realize they are in a terribly difficult situation with the decisions that they’re making,” he added.
“The opportunity will continue to be there for them to talk to Australian officials if they wish to.”
“Last night I was able to tell five women from the Iranian Women’s Soccer team that they are welcome to stay in Australia, to be safe and have a home here,” Burke said on X.
“Australians have been moved by the plight of these brave women,” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told reporters.
“They’re safe here and they should feel at home here.”
“They then had to consider that and do it in a way that did not present any danger to them or to their families and friends back home in Iran,” he continued.
Trump blasted Australia initially for risking the women’s lives, offering U.S. asylum despite strict policies.
Hours later, he commended Albanese’s swift action securing five players.
Trump’s firm stance exemplifies leadership protecting women from oppressive regimes.
This underscores America-first resolve influencing allies abroad.
