As summer lingers on, many of us still enjoy the occasional treat from an ice cream truck. However, a recent recall might make you reconsider your next purchase. On August 21, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that Unilever is recalling around 137,000 cases of Popsicle Jolly Rancher Frozen Confection Pop products.
These popsicles, specifically the Green Apple Blue Raspberry Grape variety, were sold as single-serving items from various outlets, including ice cream trucks and concession stands. The products were distributed between February 1 and August 15.
The recall was initiated after it was discovered that the popsicles might contain “milk allergens” not listed on the packaging. The FDA has reported two allergic reactions linked to these popsicles so far.
“If you do not have an allergy or sensitivity to milk, this product should not pose a risk; however, in an abundance of caution it is best that the product is disposed of, so that others with a milk sensitivity are not impacted,” Unilever explains in a recall FAQ.
People with a milk allergy or severe sensitivity could face serious or life-threatening reactions if they consume these popsicles. Hence, it is advised that anyone who purchased these products avoid eating them, regardless of their own allergy status.
All recalled popsicles share the universal product code (UPC) 077567003720. A complete list of affected lot codes is available in the FDA notice. The UPC can be found beneath the barcode, and the lot code is printed on the bottom of the wrapper.
For those who have purchased these popsicles, Unilever is offering reimbursement. Customers need to submit proof of purchase, including a photo clearly showing the UPC and lot code. This can be done by clicking “Get Started” at the bottom of Unilever’s recall page. After submission, a confirmation email will be sent from [email protected], and reimbursement will follow within eight to ten weeks.
It is important to note that this recall does not affect any other Unilever or Popsicle-brand products, including the 18-count multi-packs of Popsicle Jolly Rancher products sold in grocery stores.
Unilever has assured that they are “implementing corrective actions with the supplier to ensure [the issue] is not repeated.” For any questions, consumers can contact the Unilever Support Team at 888-926-3554, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST).
