He also mentioned that his successor “can maybe do better, can maybe help us more.”

This year, Nadler lost his leadership spot on the House Judiciary Committee as the party shifted to younger members. He was also likely to face a primary challenge from younger, more progressive candidates.

Nadler played a leading role in both congressional impeachment efforts against President Trump in 2019 and 2021.

The announcement comes as new redistricting efforts in Texas are expected to benefit Republicans, with other states evaluating similar moves. Despite Nadler’s departure, his district remains a secure seat for Democrats in Manhattan, and is not expected to affect the balance of power in Congress.
