In a recent social media blunder, Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy found himself in hot water after mistaking a parody account for the official account of Lara Trump. The White House did not hold back in its response, labeling Murphy a “moron” for his oversight.
“You are a moron, Chris. It is obvious this page is not affiliated with President Trump, his family, or the administration,” the White House’s Rapid Response 47 account stated.
This incident unfolded when Murphy, seemingly convinced by a parody post, criticized what he believed was Lara Trump’s support for arresting Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The parody account had posted a message encouraging support for Border Czar Tom Homan’s potential arrest of Ocasio-Cortez.
Murphy’s response was filled with outrage, accusing the Trump administration of hypocrisy.
“It takes some f—ng gall to have Vance lecturing Europe on ‘free speech’ when at the exact same time the Trump regime is threatening Democrats back home with arrest if they even explain people’s rights to them,” he posted.
However, Murphy’s tweet was soon flagged with a community note clarifying that the account he responded to was a parody. The note explained, “This is a screenshot of a parody account of Lara Trump. Her real account is below and no such post exists.”
The parody account’s post was likely a reaction to Ocasio-Cortez’s office hosting a webinar advising illegal immigrants on avoiding deportation. This comes amid heightened immigration enforcement under the Trump administration.
Tom Homan, the current border czar, expressed concerns about the legality of Ocasio-Cortez’s actions. He questioned, “Is that impeding our law enforcement efforts? If so, what are we going to do about it?”
There was no immediate response from Murphy’s office regarding the incident.
