Wisconsin Judge Resigns After Federal Conviction
Clear Facts
- Wisconsin Judge Hannah Dugan resigned after being convicted by a federal jury of felony obstruction.
- Dugan helped an illegal immigrant, Eduardo Flores-Ruiz, avoid arrest inside a Milwaukee courthouse.
- Republican lawmakers were preparing impeachment before her resignation.
Wisconsin Judge Hannah Dugan resigned following her federal conviction for helping an illegal immigrant escape arrest at a Milwaukee courthouse. She sent a resignation letter to Governor Tony Evers, who is now tasked with filling her position.
Prosecutors stated Dugan led Mexican national Eduardo Flores-Ruiz through a private exit to avoid waiting immigration officers. Officers intended to arrest Flores-Ruiz, who was facing state charges and had reentered the country illegally.
Dugan reportedly told agents their administrative warrant was insufficient for an arrest and directed them to the chief judge. Afterward, she helped Flores-Ruiz and his lawyer leave through a back door, although agents later detained him outside.
Federal officials deported Flores-Ruiz in November. Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos commended her decision to resign.
“I’m glad Dugan did the right thing by resigning and followed the clear direction from the Wisconsin Constitution.”
Democrat Ann Jacobs, chair of the Wisconsin Elections Commission board, offered support for Dugan on social media.
“Despite her situation, she is ever the champion of justice, wanting to remove the judiciary from a political battle over her fate.”
In her letter, Dugan described her case as “unprecedented” and said it presented “immense and complex challenges that threaten the independence of our judiciary.”
Governor Evers’ office said he will act quickly to fill the vacant seat.
