WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Twenty-five recruits of the Los Angeles County Sheriff academy were injured when an SUV went the wrong way and plowed into the running class.
  • Out of the 25 injured, five are in critical condition with injuries including broken bones, head trauma, and “loss of limbs.”
  • The 22-year-old SUV driver is already detained and CHP is investigating the incident.

While on an early morning training run, 25 Los Angeles County Sheriff’s recruits got injured, with 5 in critical condition, when an SUV hit them.

Sheriff Alex Villanueva said injuries include head trauma, broken bones and “loss of limbs.”

The class of 75 was running in four columns with two black-and-white radio cars and eight “road guards” wearing reflective vests when the vehicle crossed the northbound lanes.  The vehicle went on to hit a nearby light pole.

Captain Patrick Macdonald of the academy said, “Thank God for that light pole, because the vehicle ultimately hit it and stopped, as opposed to possibly hitting more recruits.”

The authorities have already detained a 22-year-old driver involved in the wreck. The man suffered a minor injury and passed a field sobriety test, according to the sheriff. However, a Los Angeles Times report said according to their law enforcement sources the driver said he was sleepy.

At a press conference, Sheila Kelliher, a spokesperson and captain with the Los Angeles County Fire Department said, “We know for sure we have a 22-year-old male driver that was going the wrong way and ran into the class.”  She added, “At this point that is what we know. We don’t know much else about the driver.”

According to Charlie Sampson, assistant chief of the California Highway Patrol (CHP), they are currently investigating and looking at all possibilities behind the incident.

Meanwhile, California Gov. Gavin Newsom issued a statement saying: “Our hearts are with the Los Angeles County sheriff’s recruits injured this morning while training to serve their communities.”

“Jennifer and I send our best wishes for their recovery and stand with their loved ones and colleagues at the Los Angeles county sheriff’s department during this difficult time.”

My prayers go out to the recruits & family. I always see ppl running in the streets & I think of how dangerous that is. If you must run go run in the park or schools grounds. That a lot more safer.

This is horrendous and definitely a terrorist type of thing. It will be interesting to see how this is handled being it’s Cali. The video of the kid looks like he could care less.
