Clear Facts

  • Costco Wholesale is reportedly planning to remove churros from its food court menu, according to social media users.
  • The rumors started on Reddit, with one user claiming that the churros would be replaced with cookies.
  • Costco has not yet officially confirmed these changes, but the news has sparked mixed reactions among customers.

Costco Wholesale, the multinational corporation known for its membership-only warehouses, is rumored to be discontinuing the popular churro from its food court menu. This speculation has been fueled by social media users, particularly on Reddit, as reported by The U.S. Sun.

A Reddit user, who claimed to have close ties with a Costco employee, ignited the discussion. “My brother (Costco employee) just told me they were getting rid of the churros at the food court and replacing them with cookies,” the user, who is based near the Goleta, California warehouse, stated.

The churro, a twisted, doughy treat coated in cinnamon-sugar, is currently available for purchase at $1.49 in Costco’s food courts. Despite the lack of an official announcement from the company, another Reddit user added fuel to the fire by claiming to have insider knowledge.

“It is true. They have found a company to make the cookies, agreements are finalized. They will be showing up in early 2024, along with chocolate ice cream which will appear before summer,” the Reddit user wrote.

The potential loss of the churro as a dessert option has triggered a variety of responses in the Reddit thread. One user expressed their disdain for the treat, writing, “They taste like sugar cardboard. They should phase them out and replace them with pretzels.”

However, not all responses were negative. Another user voiced their disappointment, stating, “[I] hope not. thats my fav treat there for 20 years. i WILL complain.” Some users even suggested that the churros tasted better before the COVID-19 pandemic or when the store used a different recipe.

The discussion also included suggestions for alternative dessert options, with some users proposing the return of soft pretzels or the introduction of other sweet treats.

Costco did not immediately respond to a Fox Business request for comment on the matter. It’s worth noting that Sam’s Club, one of Costco’s biggest competitors, offers both pretzels and churros in their cafés.

Clear Thoughts (op-ed)

The potential removal of churros from Costco’s food court menu has sparked a debate, illustrating the power of social media in shaping corporate decisions.

This decision, if true, reflects a broader trend of corporations bending to the whims of a vocal minority.

Costco, a community staple, should not let the tastes of a few dictate the options for the many.

Despite the complaints, there’s a clear market for the churro, evidenced by the outcry from loyal customers.

Let’s hope Costco doesn’t fall into the trap of sacrificing tradition for fleeting social media trends. After all, the churro isn’t just a dessert, it’s a symbol of consistency in a rapidly changing world.

No to deep-fat fried foods the Mexicans eat.
They are not healthy, and you know it.
As someone else suggested, pretzels can be more appetizing.
The cartels would just love Costco to adopt their culture.

And by the way, it is too hard to just get a can of pop or something to drink for the ride home.
Can’t they just have a vending machine placed near the exit?
How about some privacy for the dining area?
It could be so much more attractive without the “view” of the cash registers. LOL
