Contact Lens Habit on Long Flights Risks Permanent Eye Damage

Clear Facts

  • A traveler suffered permanent vision damage after wearing contact lenses for an 11-hour flight plus extended travel day.
  • Optometrists warn that dry cabin air pulls moisture from lenses, leading to corneal ulcers and scarring.
  • Doctors recommend switching to glasses before long flights to protect eye health.

The dry cabin air on long flights combined with extended contact lens wear is creating serious health risks for travelers who skip their glasses.

One woman recently lost partial vision in one eye after wearing contacts on an 11-hour flight home from Greece while also swimming and showering with them in. Within days she developed severe pain and light sensitivity. Doctors diagnosed a corneal ulcer that left a permanent scar blurring part of her sight.

Valerie Kattouf, an Illinois optometrist, explained the danger in plain terms.

“The cabin air has significantly reduced humidity that can actually remove moisture from the contact lens and create more dryness.”

Kattouf noted that falling asleep with contacts during overnight flights adds extra risk because lenses dry out and can scratch the cornea when removed. Travelers who keep lenses in should carry single-use artificial tears for lubrication, but the safest option remains switching to glasses before departure.

“Wearing glasses during a long flight is more ideal for eye health and long-term comfortable contact lens wear.”

Many frequent flyers have already learned this lesson the hard way. Online discussions show travelers reporting gritty, uncomfortable eyes after long-haul trips when they left contacts in place. Those who switched to glasses say their eyes feel far better upon landing and they avoid the hassle of removing lenses mid-flight or in airport restrooms.
