BREAKING: Starbucks Prices Soar: Customers Fume, Baristas Bear the Brunt
Clear Facts
- Starbucks ranks last among major coffee chains for affordability, with only 51% of customers considering it affordable.
- Despite high customer loyalty, 47% of consumers reducing their Starbucks purchases cite price as the primary reason.
- Starbucks has increased prices in California due to rising minimum wages, causing customer dissatisfaction and verbal abuse towards baristas.
Starbucks has long been a powerhouse in the coffee industry, with a substantial portion of its clientele remaining fiercely loyal. According to Business Dasher, a notable 21% of Starbucks customers return within three days, and an impressive 71% visit at least once a week. This loyalty is further highlighted by the brand’s customer retention rate of 44%, significantly higher than the industry average of 25%.
However, the coffee giant is faltering in one crucial area: affordability. According to Technomic, a mere 51% of Starbucks customers find the chain affordable. This places Starbucks at the bottom of the affordability rankings among major coffee chains, with Tim Hortons leading at 79%.
The issue of cost is not just a minor inconvenience for some customers; it’s a deal-breaker. Deutsche Bank research analyst Lauren Silberman noted that among the 45% of consumers buying less or no longer buying from Starbucks, the top reason was related to price. Silberman stated, “It’s become too expensive,” a sentiment echoed by 47% of those consumers.
Starbucks’ pricing varies across the country, but some of its offerings can be quite steep. Tasting Table reported that in Los Angeles, a seasonal “Hocus Pocus Frappuccino” could cost as much as $13.90, while a Churro Frappuccino is priced at $10.25. Such prices can quickly add up for regular customers.
In California, Starbucks has raised prices in response to the state’s minimum wage increase. A spokesperson for Starbucks confirmed that prices went up, though they did not specify the average increase per menu item. This move has not been well-received by all customers, leading to some taking out their frustrations on the baristas.
“As if we don’t get harassed enough,” lamented a Starbucks barista on Reddit, expressing frustration over the backlash. Another barista commented, “The worst part is gonna be the old men who just get a black coffee asking me why it costs more. I feel like the people with fancy drinks know they’re spending a ton already and won’t care too much.”
While Starbucks continues to enjoy a loyal customer base, the issue of affordability remains a significant concern that could impact its future growth.
