- Over four million eggs, distributed in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Michigan, are affected by this recall due to a salmonella outbreak.

Consumers are being urged to dispose of millions of eggs as the FDA elevates the recall status to its most serious category, Class I. This classification signifies a “reasonable probability” that the product could lead to “serious adverse health consequences or death.”
The recall involves Milo’s Poultry Farms LLC, located in Bonduel, Wisconsin. The eggs, branded as “Milo’s Poultry Farms” and “Tony’s Fresh Market,” have been under recall since September due to a salmonella outbreak. The recall applies to all expiration dates of these brands.
The FDA confirmed this heightened recall status, emphasizing the potential danger. According to their website, Class I recalls are reserved for situations with a significant risk to health.
The recall affects a staggering 345,417 dozen cartons, totaling more than four million eggs. These eggs were distributed to stores and restaurants across Wisconsin, Illinois, and Michigan during the summer.
The CDC has documented 65 cases of illness and 24 hospitalizations associated with these eggs, although, fortunately, no fatalities have occurred. Cases have been reported in several states, including Virginia, Iowa, Minnesota, Colorado, Utah, and California.
The recall was initiated following FDA tests that detected salmonella in the eggs.
“The recall was initiated after the FDA informed the company that environmental samples tested positive for the bacteria,” the FDA stated in a press release.
Additionally, the FDA’s whole genome sequencing linked the samples to an ongoing salmonella outbreak investigation.
Salmonella infection can cause severe symptoms such as fever, vomiting, and dehydration, posing a particular threat to the elderly and children.
Consumers are advised to discard any eggs under the “Milo’s Poultry Farms” and “Tony’s Fresh Market” labels. The CDC also recommends cleaning any surfaces or items that may have come into contact with the recalled eggs.
