In a recent appearance on “The View,” former President Bill Clinton came to the defense of Joe Biden amid swirling reports concerning the current president’s health. Clinton, who has met with Biden personally, insisted that he never observed any signs of cognitive or physical decline in the president.

“All I can say is whenever I was around him, [Biden’s] mind was clear, his judgement was good and he was on top of his brief,” Clinton stated.

Clinton criticized Biden’s former staff for their decisions leading up to the June 27 debate, which was pivotal in Biden’s eventual decision to exit the 2024 race. He questioned the rationale behind allowing an 80-year-old president to undertake extensive travel just before such a crucial event.

“But look at that debate for example, what happened in the ten days before his debate and what were the White House staff thinking?” Clinton queried.

The former president also drew parallels to past presidents who faced health challenges while in office, such as Ronald Reagan and Woodrow Wilson. Despite detailed reports in a book by CNN’s Jake Tapper and Axios’ Alex Thompson, Clinton maintained his belief in Biden’s capabilities.

“I saw President Biden not very long ago, and I thought he was in good shape, but the book didn’t register with me cause I never saw him that way,” Clinton remarked.

The book alleges that Biden’s staff and fellow Democrats were aware of his decline but chose to shield it from the public to bolster his reelection campaign. This included minimizing his public appearances and press interactions.

According to the book, Biden’s physician, Dr. Kevin O’Connor, had advised the president’s team to ensure he had more rest and take precautions against further falls, which had been a concern following an incident in June 2023.

The book also recounts an incident where Biden reportedly failed to recognize actor George Clooney at a fundraising event, highlighting the extent of his cognitive struggles. Despite initial denials from Democrats and the media, the debate performance eventually led to calls for Biden to step down, which he did in July.
