Clear Facts

  • CNN mistakenly referred to Osama bin Laden as “Obama bin Laden” during a live broadcast, sparking criticism on social media.
  • The error occurred in a graphic shown during a segment on interrogation techniques used on Al-Qaeda terrorist Abu Zubaydah.
  • CNN’s viewership has significantly declined since the 2024 presidential elections, with a 45% drop in primetime viewers.

In a glaring on-air blunder, CNN found itself in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons during a Friday night broadcast. The network mistakenly displayed a graphic that referred to the infamous terrorist Osama bin Laden as “Obama bin Laden.” This slip-up quickly became fodder for social media users, who did not hold back their criticism.

The error appeared on “CNN News Central” during a segment discussing interrogation techniques used on Abu Zubaydah, a terrorist associated with Al-Qaeda who is currently detained at Guantanamo Bay. As anchor Boris Sanchez reported on the situation, a graphic mistakenly labeled Zubaydah as an “OBAMA BIN LADEN ASSOCIATE.”

While Sanchez did not verbally confuse former President Barack Obama with Osama bin Laden, he did stumble over Zubaydah’s name. The mistake was glaringly evident to viewers, leading to a flurry of reactions online.

One user sarcastically remarked, “Yesterday CNN was talking about Big Balls. Today they’re talking about Obama Bin Laden. Great job guys!” Another commented, “CNN just had the Freudian slip of the century—‘Obama Bin Laden’ on live TV,” while suggesting that the network was part of a “propaganda machine” and labeling it as one of the “mainstream media clowns.”

Some viewers speculated that the error was deliberate. “That was not a misprint. Shame on whoever did that,” one user asserted.

This incident comes against a backdrop of declining viewership for CNN. Since the 2024 presidential elections, the network’s primetime audience has plummeted by 45%, now averaging 394,000 viewers. This is a stark contrast to the 1.8 million average viewers during the 2020 elections, which marked CNN’s most-watched election-year coverage.

Compounding its challenges, CNN recently announced layoffs affecting about 200 employees, as stated by CEO Mark Thompson. Additionally, Jim Acosta, a prominent figure at CNN known for his confrontations with Trump, gave his final broadcast on January 28 after declining an alternative time slot offered by the network.
