WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • “Let’s go, Brandon” has become the right’s new code for insulting President Joe Biden.
  • It’s an ironic reference to a postrace NASCAR interview with driver Brandon Brown.
  • The crowd chants “F*** Joe Biden” as the reporter referenced a cheer for Brown instead.

From social media platforms to Fox News, “Let’s go, Brandon” has been popping up. Apparently, it’s the right’s new insult against President Joe Biden.

This is the story behind it.

On October 9, NASCAR driver Brandon Brown won his first race in the league’s Xfinity series at Alabama’s Talladega Superspeedway.

When NBC Sports reporter Kelli Stavast was interviewing Brown, the crowd started chanting “Fuck Joe Biden” from the stands.

Since it was inappropriate on live TV, Stavast referenced a much less audible chant than the Biden one: “Let’s go, Brandon.”

“Brandon, you also told me — as you can hear the chants from the crowd, ‘Let’s go, Brandon’ — Brandon, you told me you were gonna kinda hang back those first two stages and just watch and learn,” Stavast said.

The Federal Communications Commission has strict rules regarding the use of profanity on TV. It can lead to costly fines.

Stavast, who was in a difficult spot, ignored the crowd’s anti-Biden chant and acknowledged the “Let’s go, Brandon” chant.

The post-win interview has nothing to do with politics, but Stavast’s attempt to move the interview along only fed long-standing assumptions that mainstream media outlets are pro-Democrats. Conservative media since latched on to the chant as the main example of bias against the right.

Ben Shapiro, the popular conservative podcast host and founder of the Daily Wire, captioned a Twitter screenshot on an article about the International Monetary Fund’s assessment of inflation with the same chant.

Donald Trump Jr. shared a meme featuring Biden and the Russian leader Vladimir Putin with his 5.2 million Instagram followers. “Name’s Joe but my friends call me Brandon,” it said.

“Inflation, shortages, mandates and illegals,” tweeted Tomi Lahren, a Fox News contributor and Fox Nation streaming host. “Let’s go Brandon!!!!”

Eventually, the chant ended up on a Fox News banner on Tuesday and at other professional sporting events. It also appeared on an airplane banner at a rally in Iowa for former President Donald Trump.

The bottom line is whether the reporter made the decision to try to ‘fool’ people on her own or whether her network minders told her to do so. I suspect the network did it – after all, most of us know that the lame stream media
WILL do all they can to cover up the massive discontent with slow joe.
