WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • New York Police Department (NYPD) retired detective Pat Brosnan has criticized the policies of New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio ━ claiming “he has empowered the criminals”
  • Brosnan said that de Blasio was “titanically unaware of a few facts,” and argued that gun violence was rampant and criminals can simply go shooting.
  • In recent weeks, the NYPD has reported an alarming increase in shooting and violence-related incidents.

During his interview with America’s Newsroom on Tuesday, former New York Police Department (NYPD) detective Pat Brosnan lambasted the policies made by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, saying that “he has empowered the criminals” to commit crimes.

Brosnan pointed out that the current “elements” in the city created “the perfect criminal storm and the numbers are there and the proof is in the pudding.”

“The bottom line is we have Mayor de Blasio who is frequently wrong, but never in doubt,” the retired detective said on Tuesday.

He also said that de Blasio “is titanically unaware of a few facts,” emphasizing a key point that “gun violence is up” and offenders can simply shoot because they can.

“And the reason they can is because [de Blasio] has empowered the criminal and he has desecrated the NYPD,” Brosnan added. “That intersection of those disbarred elements has created an absolute avalanche of shootings because no one is stopping them [the criminals.]”

Brosnan also blamed the recent bail reform, noting it adds to the fact that “jails are empty because of COVID,” and that “prosecutors are disinterested, have no interest in prosecuting these cases.”

Under the past law, prosecutors would determine whether to carry out a recommendation for bail or allow the defendant to be released on their recognizance prior trial, subject to the judge’s decision. Typically, defense lawyers would argue that bail should not be set or negotiate for a lower bond.

And now under the new law, courts cannot order the defendants who committed almost every type of misdemeanor or felony crimes to post bail or be kept in custody before trial.

Brosnan continued: “The guns were always here, but Mayor [Mike] Bloomberg, Mayor [Rudy] Giuliani, through their police commissioners and aggressive police reform, kept everything in check, but these guys were biding their time, they were waiting and the time now is at hand.”

In a nutshell, the former detective said that all the disparate factors ━ the brutal killing of George Floyd, bail reform, and a “desecrated police department” have created “the perfect criminal storm.”

In recent weeks, the NYPD has recorded a significant increase in shooting and violence-related incidents. From Friday to Sunday, New York City has recorded over 28 crimes based on the NYPD statistics. Versus year ago, the department reported a staggering 600 percent increase in shooting incidents and a 483 percent growth rate in shooting victims.
