WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Democrat lawmaker Nancy Pelosi criticized President Trump for repeatedly calling Russian bounties on American troops, Russia’s participation in the 2016 election and COVID-19 reports a hoax.
  • The House speaker’s attack comes before the Gang of Eight’s briefing to discuss the said intelligence reports.
  • Trump called the stories a hoax, saying that the opposition only uses the unverified reports to attack the Republicans.

On Thursday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi attacked Trump’s claim about reports on Russian bounties on American forces, it’s alleged meddling in U.S. electorate, and news about COVID-19 is a hoax.

“He’ll say this is a hoax, and it’s a hoax that they are 24/7 trying to disrupt our election as they did in 2016. He says the coronavirus is a hoax. The fact is the president himself is a hoax,”  Pelosi said.

The speaker told MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle during an interview that she was sure that Republicans have a certain level of participation in the upcoming intelligence meeting about the Russian bounty stories.

Pelosi’s remarks come ahead of the Gang of Eight’s conference, a meeting that she and leading legislative leaders have on the morning of Thursday.

She also hoped the group would be there at their slated briefing to get at the bottom of the truth about the intelligence reports,  and Republican Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell attends with an open mind instead of ‘Moscow. Mitch.’

I only earlier this year that the president called the Democrats’ disapproval of the White House’s coronavirus response as the opposing party’s new hoax. Trump also tried to link the criticism to the failed impeachment, but he wasn’t heard calling the coronavirus as a hoax.

On Wednesday, Trump tweeted that the stories of Russia offering rewards to Taliban-associated forces to kill U.S. service members are a hoax.

In the same tweet, the president also said the report was just another fake news aimed to attack the Republican Party, adding that their unnamed source might not have existed in the first place.

Trump’s tirade comes after NBC News reported the U.S. intelligence had acquired information that its Russian counterparts said they would give rewards Taliban militia who could kill Americans.

The outlet said it received the details from three anonymous resources who were part of the briefing about the matter.

A senior defense official, though,  shrugged off the intelligence reports, noting no proof was presented that there was indeed a bounty.

“You just wonder what the president would be thinking if this kind of intelligence had come forth about any other country, but every time it’s Russia, as I’ve said over and over. With this president all roads lead to Putin,” Pelosi said.

Pelosi said later in the interview that Trump should resign from the presidency because of neglect of duty.
