Secret Service rental vehicles caught on fire after Biden family vacation [Video]

At least five vehicles recently rented by the U.S. Secret Service (USSS) caught on fire at the parking lot of the Nantucket Memorial Airport, a day after President Joe Biden and his family returned from their Thanksgiving vacation.
The vehicles caught on fire on Monday, just a day after Biden left Nantucket. USSS had just returned the vehicles to the rental car company Hertz, the Nantucket Current reported.
According to the airport’s statement, staff spotted “an active fire in the rental car overflow area” through their CCTVs at about 5:22 a.m. “Staff activated the Alert system and responded to the fire in Airport-3, where they were met by responding units from Nantucket Fire Department and Nantucket Police Department,” they added.
The fire was eventually contained and extinguished thanks to the “combined fire resources” who responded. It did not affect the airport’s operations.
The blaze caused no injuries but significantly damaged at least four cars. The front ends of the vehicles were entirely torched. It also happened about 40 feet away from the airport’s 25,000-gallon jet fuel tanks.
Officials towed away five vehicles: a Chevy Suburban, Ford Explorer, Infiniti QX80, Ford Expedition, and Jeep Gladiator.
The USSS rented these vehicles to transport and escort the president’s family around the island during their Thanksgiving vacation.
The cause of the fire is not yet clear. The Nantucket Current stated that the Ford Expedition is under a manufacturer recall for a battery issue and was due for a replacement service. The news agency previously reported that the vehicle’s battery had been switched out but later corrected that its battery had not yet been replaced at the time of the fire.
Authorities have launched an investigation, given that the president’s security detail had just used the vehicles a day before the fire.
The president flew to Nantucket with first lady Jill Biden on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. They were accompanied by the president’s son, Hunter Biden; his wife, Melissa Cohen; and their son, Beau Jr. They celebrated Thanksgiving on the island, after which the president returned to Washington, D.C., on Sunday, November 27.
